Slide 27: New trends I
Conservation paradigms have changed in relation to these pressures placed on conservation. Currently there is more of an emphasis on conservation rather than on strict preservation, and sustainable use of resources is seen as being important in many areas. Systems are allowing for change rather than being held in some past static state. Equally there's the realization that conservation must pay its way, and therefore tourism and other value addition activities are looked at for conservation land. A new trend also is the global contribution to third world conservation. This is being funded through global funds such as the GEF (Global Environmental Facility) which is helping set up conservation areas in a number places in southern Africa.
