Slide 16 : Succulent Karoo
This map shows the location of the Succulent Karoo biome. As can be seen, a very limited portion of this biome is conserved; this despite the fact that this biome has both high species diversity and a very high level of endemism. It is typified by small succulents and sparse individual plants.
Occurs in the Karoo and up the west coast of South Africa, into Namibia.
Most importantly, less than 0.5% formally conserved, although the extent of land transformation in the region is considerably less than in the West Coast Renosterveld, for instance.
