Instrumental measurement of climate variables is an important data source, although we only have true records for a short historical period.
Using standard instruments, we record:
Atmospheric aerosol and gas concentrations
These standard variables allow measurement of change in the earth's systems. Each of these sets of measurements portrays an important part of the earth's climatic system, especially in terms of interactions with the biosphere. However, possibly the most useful of these measurements is temperature.
