Limb reduction
Many lizard families have members with reduced limbs that may even be lost altogether and parallels the amphibian groups Gymnophiona and Caudata. Skinks show a progression of limb reduction. The snakelizards of South Africa (Family Pygopodidae), even within their single genus, have some species with a complete complement of functional legs each with five toes; another species possesses very small limbs, with only two fully developed toes on each foot and a third species has hind legs with a single toe and no externally visible front limbs.
