Amphicynoid

Bear dog as reconstructed in "Walking with Beasts"

Other carnivores were the smaller bear dogs or Amphicynoid. They ranged in sizes from dog-like up to the size of a grizzly bear and in fact they are related to both. Their name Amphicynoid means "in between dog". They probably hunted prey like rodents and other small mammals. Although this line is extinct today, they survived up to nine million years ago. Fossils have been found in Eurasia and North America.
