Andrewsarchus

Andrewsarchus

Andrewsarchus as portrayed in documentary "Walking with Beasts"

A huge land predator of the Eocene was Andrewsarchus. They were part of a now extinct order of even-toed carnivorous hoofed animals (mesonichyds). Only a fossilized skull and a few bones had been found in Mongolia, but from the shape of the skull, it is deducted that it had a wolf like body, like the other mesonichyds. It was probably about 4-5 meters long, with huge almost one meter long bone-crunching jaws. They were as tall as a rhino and possibly the largest ever terrestrial carnivorous mammal, weighing up to 1500 kilograms. (12)
