Dorudon

Dorudon

Closely related to Basilosaurus, was Dorudon. They were a lot shorter (only up to five meters long), more compact dolphin-like mammals that could probably swim fast. They were carnivorous hunting smaller fish and molluscs. They had spear like teeth as their name suggests (Dorudon means spear toothed) and lived in warm seas around the world. They also lacked the melon organ, but otherwise looked a lot like modern whales. Fossils have been found in Egypt (Fayum deposits) and North America. (11)
