Gastornis

Fossilized bones from Gastornis Reconstruction of Gastornis

Another forest dweller at that time was Gastornis, a flightless bird as tall as a man and weighing some 100 kilograms. It had a huge beak, which seems to indicate that it was a ferocious hunter and/or scavenger. However, its beak could have been only for sexual display as well, as it seems more suited for cracking nuts than for tearing and slicing meat. The first fossil finds were in Geiseltal, Germany. (2)
