Display or Remove a Index Map
An Index Map Tool gives the main map context by showing where the map fits into the broader scheme of things. For instance, if we were making viewing the "Cape Lowland Renosterveld" maps the Index Map showing where in South Africa you are may look like this.
An Index Map may also cover the same area as the map itself when it first opens. In our example we are looking at an Index Map, which accompanies a map of South Africa. The red rectangle reflects the current extent of the map viewer. As you zoom in and out, the Index Map can be a useful tool, as it helps you to stay oriented.
When you have zoomed in greatly the red box is replaced with a red star indicating the relative position.
You can display the Index Map by pressing the Index Map tool from the toolbox. Choose another map function, and it will disappear from the Information Panel.
